MBP (Late 2013 Retina display) is shutting down randomly

I have a late 2013 15 inch MacBook Pro I bought off Amazon used. It has a core i7 2.0 Ghz processor and 16 GB of RAM. It's running Mac OS Sierra 10.12.4. The battery cycle count is 420.

The problem is that it randomly shuts down without any notice. Usually, the screen goes black but the keyboard shows light for a few seconds before it completely shuts down.

Usually when I open it after sometime it works like nothing is wrong but after a while it shuts down and then keeps shutting down subsequently. Runs hot though especcially if I'm running Xcode.

Interestingly, I have been using it in a clamshell mode quite a lot and it has never shut down in that particular mode.

Till now I have tried:

  • SMC reset
  • Reinstalling OS from scratch
  • PRAM Reset
  • Running in safe mode (it did shut down but not as frequently as in regular mode)

Can anyone offer any other suggestions?

I suspect it is running hot in clamshell mode causing the overheat sensor to shut it down. Open it up and clean out the fan, remove it and clean the vent.

But its not shutting down in clamshell mode at all. Infect in laptop mode when it's not that hot, its shutting down.

Sorry I misread your statement. But I would still recommend doing what I said. Be sure to disconnect the battery before getting around the logic board.

It can be an overheating problem. I would start from monitoring the cpu temp when it’s under load. And does this only happen when its on battery or does it still happen if its plugged in?

the cpu app I loaded gives a percentage of processor load: 3%-4.5%

is there a recommended 'free' cpu temp. app ?

Experiencing exactly the same issue with the same model Macbook Pro 15”. I suspect there is something wrong with the onboard memory.

  • Shutting down randomly, safe boot is much better than normal boot. OS will shut down in few mins in normal boot, however it might last few hrs in safe boot model.
  • Running on battery or on power adapter seems doesn’t matter, shuts down all the same.
  • No shuts down in Recovery Model or the process of installation.
  • Seems not caused by overheating, also shuts down when wakes up from cold.

@siner55 , not sure if you have fixed this issue after all? If yes, will you please enlighten how? Cheers.

Found a solution from below thread, worked for me:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOSBeta/comme...

FIX:

Reboot with CMD+R pressed to boot into macOS Recovery

Open Terminal from Utilities menu

Type: mv /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltNHI.kext /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltNHI.kext.BAK

Reboot
