When I turn it on I get 2 vertical lights, then a cross of 4 lights, and this repeats....
It's not connecting to the internet, and not responding to any questions
This started about a week ago. For the previous 6 months it has been ok
I suspect its a software update problem. Can you help me?

Each of these won’t take more than a few minutes at most, so when Google Home doesn’t respond:
Press the microphone mute button to see if Google Home was muted accidentally.
Unplug Google Home before waiting at least a minute to plug it back in.
Gently blow on both black dots on the top of Google Home, and then wipe the top with a soft and dry
Perform a factory reset by pressing and holding the microphone mute button for 15 seconds until you hear the confirmation from Google Assistant. A factory reset will clear all personal data from Google Home.

I had the same issue with my Google home.
But after updating my home address, its work like a charm. Update your as well:
Open the Google Home app on your Smartphone → Tap on the hamburger → More settings → Google Account settings → Update Personal info.
If this solution does not work for you, then try some other fixes to solve Google Home not responding problem.

The new google home update crashes upon setup. I have Android 4.4.2 so it "should" work. Jimmycurk@gmail.com

It was a software update issue. Had to reboot the whole thing and reset it…..
