What does this part function as on a 6s plus front facing camera?

https://imgur.com/a/YIEIV

Today while I was doing a 6s plus repair I broke this little square off of the front-facing camera. (Image above) I am curious what it functions as.

I assumed it was the proximity sensor so when the customer puts their phone to their ear it will no longer be a black screen.

This was my first time breaking that off after several repairs. I guess it was a tad stuck in there. Also, what are some methods you use to prevent this from happening?

Thanks.

Yes, that's the proximity sensor and it does stick in that plastic casing at times. When it looks like it's going to be stuck, I often try to pry the entire plastic housing up off the screen rather than try to pry the proximity sensor out of the plastic housing. Otherwise, work it out of the housing by prying all around instead of one spot or by not pulling it out by the cable itself.

Thanks Greg. So the only issue the customer should have is his screen not going black when his ear is put to it?

I tested the microphone and it worked so I just decided to continue with the repair.

I think next time I'm having trouble I'll try and stick something in there and pry the plastic up like you said. Thanks

I always use a bit of heat when removing the camera flex components and the home button assemblies off of all iphone screen replacements.

Not alot...80 - 90 C for a 10 to 15 seconds softens the adhesive without damaging any of the components and never had any issues getting anything apart.

I actually have never used heat for a screen repair. Home buttons are always super easy to get out so I've never worried about heating that up.

As far as the camera I could see using a bit of heat to help get the sensor out easier. I actually did that repair in a library so it was a bit out of the question... haha
