MacBook won't turn on - Logic board gets warm and seems to hold charge

Hi all,

I have a 2015 Macbook 12'' - just out of warranty (3 yrs).

I was browsing the Internet and all of a sudden everything froze (screen / mouse / keyboard). I held the power button down, it turned off; Since then, I have been unable to turn it back on.

Have tried SMC reset, PRAM reset, holding the power button in for 20 seconds (and various combinations of without/with power etc)...Nada. Keyboard backlight won't come on either.

The weird thing is that if I leave it plugged in, after about a minute, I can feel the underside of the logic board getting warm. If I let it charge then unplug it, the underside will remain hot for a few hours, just as if the system is 'stuck' doing something and draining the battery down.

Have opened it to try and disconnect the battery completely, in the hope that it is just stuck in some deep sleep mode and cutting all power would reset it...Nope. I can see the white LED on if I have charged it up, so parts of it seem to be working...

Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks!

Update (02/25/2018)

This is what I see with the battery disconnected and the charger plugged in (you can see the white LED is on). The system will not start nevertheless...

The CPU? (big rectangle on the right) gets hot almost immediately...

Unfortunately it does look like an expensive repair :-(

Any ideas welcome!

Thanks

Did you find anything out on this? My 2016 has the same symptoms and the little white light also illuminates.

Did you get it to work?

Unfortunately not….Had to replace the whole system board…Not cheap!

Same problem, same observation of led and no solution, but does anyone have a idea of the cause?

I’ll just leave this here.

I’ve replaced this chip on mine successfully (visually) but no luck. Don’t have as advanced equipment to test further.

The White LED on the front is to let you know your system is sleeping.

Lets try this open your system again and disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected. Resting it on its side plug in your MagSafe charger did the system spontaneously start up?

Let us know what happens

Hi, this is a MacBook 12'' 2015 -

When I say the white led, I mean when I open it up, on the logic board, next to 'Battery disconnect' and the screw, there is a white led (which if I had it plugged in is on) and on the other side of the screw is a small button which if you keep pressed I assume disconnects the battery (led goes off).

Have isolated the battery by using the ifixit clip for a couple of hours, but that doesn't do anything.

System is using a USB-C charger, so I can't see the status led as you could with earlier Macs. Have tried using a new charger, but still same...

Thank you

Sorry if I confused you I meant USB-C charger. Yes, the lack of an LED indicator on the charger or cable end does make this harder.

As the case is getting warm (battery) I'm thinking the charging logic on the logic board has a problem at this point. Time to visit Apple.
