Cannot open the printer cover to replace ink cartridges

I had a very frustrating problem with my printer - I think actually a firmware bug from Epson. It would go back and forth between saying Replace Ink Cartridges and another error about invalid ink cartridge detected. There is a lock where you cannot open the top unless it gets out of this state but it was stuck in that state.

There is a small square on the display side of the scanner glass one for each side lock to open the panel. Visit https://printerdeets.com for more in-depth printing guides.

Best answer is by Karen Jaggi below-- make sure to lift not just the lid to the scanner, but the ENTIRE TOP of the printer that exposes the innards. (There are two levels of being able to lift the top.) THEN you can open the lid to the ink cartridges easily and get the business taken care of. Great printer, but a quirky thing to have happen when you're trying to do a simple refill. Refill is easy after you figure this little problem out. This worked for printer ET-3760.

Karen Jaggi saved my sanity. Epson own video does not show that.

Thanks much.

My ink cartridge carrier would go all the way to the right. In fact, too far so that the arrows would not line up. The next time I got the carrier to go the left and return right to the arrows, I just placed the handles of my scissors all the way to the right. Placed them in the way against the right side. The carrier then stopped perfectly at the arrow and aligned. I could then change my ink cartridges!!! WHEW!!

Started to take it apart - very frustrated. Then thought I'd check here. Your solution worked. Don't think I could have thought of a poorer design. Thanks Steve!

Solution retenue

And here is the answer that even Epson support didn't know (they claimed it was a HW issue which it was not). There is a small rectangular slot on the front right of the cover. Gently push a screwdriver or the point of a scissor down into that and it releases the top!

I was then able to replace the ink cartridges and all was well again.

Outrageous design fault. How can companies like this put out such rubbish

par

still cant open it

where exactly is the slot? Don't see anything to the right of the ink hatch cover. I can lift the right side of the cover but the left side is locked down tight. Don't want to break it, though people have said they've forced it open

Whew! I was so close to finding a hammer. But I just bought this dumb thing! Thank you Robin McCabe!

It was so simple I had to record it here, for you, my Boomer friends (and me in case I forget.) INSTRUCTIONS: So… the cover needs to be CLOSED then lift the second cover to expose internal workings of printer. Then “gentle as butter” just flip up that %#*@ ink cartridge lid.

I swear, when I watched the Epson video and they started with an OPEN PRINTER I briefly hated them. I fiddled around with firm pressing and such, never a good idea when dealing with plastic, and then, just wanted to smack my printer. grrrrrrrr. NOT INTUITIVE for those of us who don’t care how a toaster is made, just how it works. I demand a video redo from #EPSON.

I have to add I LOVE this printer. Ink lasts a long time and I’m thrilled not to have to use those awful cartridges.

Oh my gosh!!!!!! I have just tried to figure this out for the last hour! Your answer was the ONLY one that solved my problem. The Epson instructional video is completely wrong. Thank you for your help!

Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.

Thank you so much!!! I have killed an entire evening on this. Every demonstration starts with the lid open. This has been one of the most maddening devices I have ever owned. As soon as the pandemic is over, I am going to Costco to get another HP!!!

Thanks! .......from a Boomer:)

Thanks Karen for the good clear instructions! EPSON --- Just lift the lid that shows the internal workings of printer. Please change your instructions!!!!

You have to tell the printer that you want to replace the cartridge using the menu on the touch screen. From the home screen, select Settings, Maintenance, Ink Cartridge(s) Replacement. Follow the directions on the screen. The printer will move the carriage to the position where you will be able to lift up the lid and replace the cartridge. Close it back up again, then let the printer go through its routine, and you'll be good to go.

Thank you. Seems like a lot of steps for something so basic and critical to normal functioning

What a great and simple answer..... Seems that the good people at Epson might want to let people know they have solved the problem. Even their website is not showing the simple solution.

Thank you Renee! For a year we have been lifting up the lid and replacing the cartridges without a problem until a few days ago. Trying to replace the ink and it would not line up the arrows to get the little ink tray cover open to be able to do so. We opened up the settings on the screen and went to maintenance and then Ink Cartridges (Replacement) then you could open up the lid and the ink cartridge box would move and arrows would line up. Finally able to replace the ink cartridge.

Thank you Renee. I have a 7820 and like the person above, I have changed my ink without a problem for the last year. Then, 2 weeks ago, the cover was stuck under the printer frame. A bunch of posts said to find a rectangular slot on the front side of the cover. But, I have no such slots. Apparently, on 5/29/2021 a guy, Alan K gave this same instruction far down in the comments. I couldn't find a way to thank him. So, I'm thanking YOU cuz you also posted this simple remedy right in the Settings option. So, that is fixed. My new ink cartridges are properly installed. But, now all colors print but not the black. Is there a remedy for that.

Hi guys, I’m using the L6270 series. All you need to do is:

  1. Open the scanner black cover lid. (First layer)
  2. Then open up the glass lid. (2nd layer). You can look out for the concave latch on the sides to lift it.
  3. You will see a lever guide on the bottom right where the cartridge cover is. Open the cover. 👍🏼

# The design is not user friendly, making it a puzzle for most of us!!!

Just replaced the ink cartridge and now Lid is locked up and will not close. How frustrating. Does this lid staying open like this damage the ink cartridges. Dry them out or something? Help

Any luck getting it closed? Mine is doing the exact same thing

After much poking and prodding, I realized the ink cartridge holder wasn't all the way over to the right. Once I pushed it a little bit it seemed to lock in. Lid went down easily then.
