Repair water damage

A little over a year ago my iPhone stopped working, so I brought it to Apple and they told me it had water damage. I have since replaced it with a 3G, but want to see whether its worth fixing the 1G. If I plug it in to a dual ac/usb plug it powers up and seems fine except for the back button. Once I unplug it, it automatically powers down. If I try to plug it in with a regular AC power adapter, it will not power up at all. It also says 'Repair needed: iPhone cannot make or receive calls. www.apple.com/support' when it does power up. Any ideas on were I should start in trying to troubleshoot what needs replacement?

#!@$ I was hoping it would be logic board, that is an expensive part to buy and find out it's not the issue. Thanks though.

Clean the locig board with acetone. There must be oxide on somewhere on logic board. The color of oxide is white some times grey.

You can use tooth brush.

Update

Look at the pic.

acetone???

isopropanol would be my choice - acetone "reacts" with plastics - i used acetone to "recreate" broken plastic stuff, fill holes in cell phone covers and so on

I used acetone on ipod nano main PCB. There was no reaction. Yes you are right acetone can damage to plastic parts.

old answer, just to reiterate, do NOT USE ACETONE. Use isopropyl alcohol in a high percentage range, ethanol and even STERILE water if you have to...

"Repair needed" actually indicates a problem with the radio / baseband board; if you can find another one for free / cheap, you might try replacing that (but it could still end up being a problem with the logic board).

any iphone with Damp damage should NEVER be turned on before a dryout.

Solution 1.

Leave in sleep mode, dont press any buttons, place in a zipbag full of rice leave in warm place for at least 24 hrs. Works fine, then OK.

Solution 2.

If there is a visual of ANY kind but not normal, attempt turn off.

Remove ALL covers, blow dry on hot using dryer, leave to stand in sunlight or similar for 48hrs, assemble and retry.

Solution 3

Strip completely,if 1GEN-remember to separate communication board from logic board, ALL pcb's should be immersed in ISO-PROPONOL alcohol for at least 3 hrs, this loosens the inevitable buildup of oxide, remove pcb's one at a time and scrub thoroughly with rough microbrush, tough toothbrush may be sufficient, rinse once again in alcohol and allow to dry in hot temperature or maybe blowdry in hot setting.

before assembling, a thorough rub of connectors may be necessary using methylated spirit.

NOTE; Battery may need replacong or re-vitalizing.

I'd stay away from the HOT dryer and would use isopropyl alcohol in a high percentage range. I also stay away from methylated spirits due to the possibility of damaged caused by the addition of acetone and/or ketone to the ethanol

I used alcohol to clean board, and then before reasembly used a small amount of armorall on a soft cloth to make the board not be chalky white looking. not that the appearance is the issue I just assumed it probably would not have any possible oxidization with the use of this. and this was done on a portable dvd player, which had been outside in the rain and snow of the winter months without my knowledge of it being there. the board actually had rust around the volume wheel and couple other places but worked perfect after little tlc, I have fixed many things since this one with the same products. : ) Not sure if anyone will even read this being year since last post but heck I suppose I am here reading the previous so chances are possible.
