@fusebox. sounds like a bad thermoswitch. Here is the explanation why it comes on with the AC:"

The electric radiator cooling fan assembly is controlled by a thermoswitch located in the side of the radiator. At higher coolant temperatures, the switch closes to start the cooling fans. Any time the coolant temperature rises to higher than normal levels, the fan will start and continue to run until coolant temperature returns to a normal range. On vehicles with air conditioning, rising refrigerant pressures will also activate the cooling fans.

Attached documents will show you how to test the switch etc. Fan-and-Thermoswitch.pdf

Out of all that I have read on internet about the problem I am having with this car and the days I have spent working on it I just found this information on my tablet. I wish I could have found it days ago . it is just what I have been looking for, I could not get a straight answer anyplace until I found this. Thank you so much.

My 2013 Hyundai i10 has one fan and as far as I can see one coolant temp sensor. I replaced water pump and radiator and coolant temp sensor. When I turn on the ac the fan works and keeps the car cool. When the ac is of the radiator hoses both become same heat after a while and the overflow reservoir starts boiling over and the fan do not kick in.

Any advise please.

What did you find out how to fix it was it just the fans its self

I have the exact same problem. The fan would not come on unless I turn on the AC. I have changed the thermostat, temperature sensor and radiator cap. Still the problem persists. Someone should help.

Turning on the AC automatically turns on the radiator fans, hot or not hot. In order for the AC Condensor to do its job it must stay as cool as it can. As for the engine coolant temp sensor, if the coolant is not hot enough to make the fan come on, then there is no need for the fan yet and there is no problem. Simply the engine is not hot enough to turn on the cooling fan, its not hot enough outside, you are driving getting plenty of air flow through the grille to keep things cool without the assistance of the fan. Its possible that you have no problem at all.

my 2013 Nissan altima smells as though it is running hot but my gauge is fine. my fans dont come on without me turning my ac on. i have check the temps of the hoses and they are at 200.4 when i turn my ac on is when both fans kick on and temp goes down to 174 on the hose. it is just me or the smell ive been smelling something wrong?

par

@emmarea76 it's not overheating and sounds like it's working perfectly. You can have a fluid leak that can cause that king of smell. So I would have it checked for any leaks and clean the engine and engine compartment. But it's not getting hot enough to turn on the fans. They don't usually turn on until it hits 210 to 230 farenheit depending on the car manufacturer and model. And the fans will come on anytime your ac compressor is working. It has a sensor that detects the pressure that is being built up.

i have an 2010 SS Camaro, with a cold engine both fans are on, if I had the defrost or air conditioner on. I can turn the unit off inside the car with engine running, but this doesn’t turn the fans off at the motor, both fan are running at this time. The only way to get both fans that are running at a very high spreed, making the car sound as if its a jet about to take off, off is to turn the engine off, turn off the fan switch inside the car and restart.

We have replace both the fan relays, and the temp switch. We are still having the same problem, any advise at this time would be grateful.

@emmarea76 I also have that exact same problem

Have you checked the fuses in the black box on top of the battery. Those steel like fuses.

Fuse 16 on the side of the dashboard.

When opening the cover it will be the 2nd fuse from the top left.

It is for the fan module. When the ignition is on and you pull it the fans should kick in and turn slow speed.

You can also put direct power by pulling the fan plugs and putting on power and ground to them. Fast speed and slow speed, fan should start turning.

You might have an initial temperature sensor which causes the fan to come on when the temperature begins to rise; that sensor might be defective.

Then when you turn the A/C on, the temperature goes up even higher, which triggers the next sensor.

I would look for an initial, "low temp" sensor that is defective.

for my peugeot 206, fan comes on only if i turn on A/C otherwise wont, (regardless of what is car temperature )

I have the same problem did you fix it

Same problem, any results ?

I had a same problem, Peugeot 307, it was faulty temp. sensor on radiator. When AC was running, fan would work normally, but if I had AC off and engine was overheating the fan would not turn on.

And now I have a different problem, exact oposite, engine temp. triggers the fan but AC does not.
