There is a timing mark, and a timing plate. You need to find these on your car. (The timing mark is on the flywheel.) And you need to get a piece of chalk and put a chalk mark on the timing mark, and at the correct position on the timing plate. The chalk marks will make things easier to see. The timing plate will have a mark for Top Dead Center (TDC), as well as some marks for Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) and some marks for After Top Dead Center (ATDC). Find out what is the correct setting for your car (for example, 5 degrees before top dead center), and put a chalk mark at that spot on the timing plate.

Now find out which spark plug wire is for cylinder #1. Connect the timing light clamp to that spark plug wire.

Get the correct wrench for loosening and tightening your distributor. Loosen it just enough to allow you to turn it clockwise and counter clockwise.

Now crank the car, squeeze the trigger on the timing light, and point the timing light at the timing plate. The flashing of the light will show you where the timing mark lines up with the timing plate. If the two chalk lines aren't together, rotate the distributor either clockwise or counterclockwise until the two lines are perfectly lined up. Now tighten the distributor, so that it will no longer move.

Additional info:

When you are shining the timing light on the timing plate, the light will flash once every time spark plug #1 fires. Spark plug #1 needs to fire at the correct time so as to make the motor run its best. The timing mark on the flywheel shows exactly where in the cycle that the spark plug is firing; but the only way to be able to see it is for a light to flash on it when the spark plug fires. Generally, as the piston is coming up and compressing the gas that is in the cylinder, the spark plug will fire just prior to when the piston is at the very top. In other words, before top dead center. If it is a little bit off, the motor will run, but not as well as it can. If it is very much off, the motor won't run at all.
