HDMI lightning IPad cable

I bought an hdmi-lightning cable to mirror my iPad onto the tv. All was good until I forgot the cable was connected and moved away whilst holding the iPad. The lightning end just broke clean.

the cable is £10 so I’m trying to salvage it, any ideas please?

one idea I had is to cut the cable at the lightning end and cut a usb extension cable I have at home near the female end. Then solder the wires matching wire colours hence creating an hdmi female usb cable… then connect this to my iPad via the standard iPad cable. Any thoughts on this please? Anything to watch out for if I go down this route?

is there a better route?

many thanks.

Thank you so much for your advice.

The cable that I bought is like this one https://www.amazon.com/Lightning-T-CORE-...

and the lighting end tip (just the tip) snapped off as I moved away with the iPad in my hand. I will attach a photo…

i have now chopped off the broken lightning end and it shows just the four wire as seen in the attached photo. So would my idea now work? ie, connect these four wires to the female usb connector of an existing usb extension cable (by matching wire colour) and then use the standard iPad usb/ lighting cable to connect to the iPad.

A picture would help so that we could see what kind of adapter you are using and where the damage is.

What kind of adapter are you using: something like this or something like this?

Keep in min that a Lightning connector has 8 pins and also has the ability to automatically switch pin 5 (+5V) depending on the orientation of the plug. There is a lot of electronics packed into the Apple adapters. Take a look at the “simple” audio jack dongle.

As for the Lightning AV adapter, it is even more complex [1][2].

So depending on what broke and where, this may not be a simple fix and it may not be a standard 4 wire USB connection. Give us more info so we can point you in the right direction.

In that case, trash it, it's not worth fixing IMHO...unless you want to do this for fun and learning.

Thank you very much. I suspected that this may be the case..

my next question is this. Is the lightning tip (including any electronics that it has) in my broken cable the same as in the standard Apple lightning cable?

Yes it is .
