Portafilter sprays water when pulling shot of water to warm components

When i pull a shot of plain water to warm the portafilter and shot glass the machine kinds of pops and sends water spraying out of the top of the portafilter. However when i pull a shot of espresso the machine work fine no spraying. The problem only happens when there is no coffee in portafilter any suggestions?
