Why won't my camera stay on?

My Canon PowerShot S2 IS hasn’t been used for a while. I just put in new batteries, and it turned on, took one photo, and went black screen. I turned it off, turned it back on, and got a message saying to replace the batteries. I replaced them with another set of fresh batteries, and the same thing happened. How can I get my camera to work? It’;s too old for Canon to service it.

Is there any corrosion on battery terminals inside camera?

I tried to clean the contacts, but the camera still didn’t work, so I brought it in for repair. It turned out that the problem was indeed dirty contacts. I just wasn’t able to get at them well enough to clean them properly myself. So now everything works.

@sukayser

use a different brand of batteries. Preferably rechargeable. Some of these cameras can really suck those batteries dry almost immediately.

4 AA Canon cameras are major offenders for killing AAs quickly nearly 100% of the time with the S2IS being one of the infamous models. I know someone who used one regularly but hasn’t since it gives the E18 error once in a while - they kill batteries like they’re going out of style unless you use 2500mAh+ NiMh cells($$) or Primary Lithium($$$). NiMh is ultimately cheaper as you don’t need to throw away expensive batteries, but don’t last as long.

My SX150 (2 AA) was also horrible before the battery cover broke and I couldn't find a reasonably priced one, so I never repaired it. I can still try the repair it as I have it, but it's not easy to find one that works since I need the shell as that's also broken and those are usually busted along with the cover. I tried to see if it's feasible and it wasn't last time I checked, plus the battery issue - I don’t think it will ever be.
