Logic board or dock connector issue?

My 3rd gen iPod was working fine until a couple months ago when I let the battery drain. When I tried to recharge it about a couple weeks ago the iPod began showing the folder with question mark Icon, although the hard drive was fine. I’ve tried several ways (even a zero-out using Disk Utility) until it fell from my bed (I was unaware I had the iPod there). From then on the iPod kept working but it didn’t connect to iTunes or charge via FireWire unless I took the rear metal plate off, sometimes I connected the charger and the iPod made small beeping sounds (like a truck on reverse) but it didn’t turn on. So, based on this I believe that there are two possibilities:

  1. The dock connector needs to be replaced or resoldered: More likely since it’s slightly bent upwards and the iPod freezes when connected to a computer via USB (this had been happening for some time)
  2. The logic board shorted: This seemingly would explain why the iPod can’t read the hard drive or connect to iTunes.

I want to know what are your thoughts on this and which you may think it will be the problem. If needed I can upload pictures of the logic board.

Update: I had abandoned the idea of repairing this iPod, I took it to a technician which soldered the Dock Connector, but the result was the same and even worse as the iPod didn’t charge when connected to the FW Adapter. As of last month, I purchased an used iPod Color U2 which had a fully working hard drive, after restoring it to factory settings on my Mac I got the same folder screen which the 3rd gen showed me. So after many hours of frustration and forethought, I decided to format the Hard Drive with Windows… Voila! I formatted both iPod Photo and the 3rd gen hard drive with a Windows and it solved the problem, I can now use them and sync the music on my mac. I guess it has something to do with the Read/Write permissions on my Mac or the quantity of iPods that I have synced to my mac (I’m a collector). I hope this helps some of you that are having trouble with the folder with exclamation mark and a working hard drive!
