Why is my irobot showing err 5 while on the charger

The 500 series was first produced in 2007 and discontinued in August of 2012. The particular model of interest for this page is the 595 Pet Series.

Looks like it is an issue with the charging system, could be as simple as dirty contacts on the robot and the dock.
