Phone is powered on, but the screen is black

I have an iPhone 6 that had a mashed sleep/wake button that was no longer able to move. The phone was powering on but the screen would stay black (not even a back light). I’ve replaced the button/ribbon cable thinking that it was stopping it from waking the screen.

The new sleep/wake button and ribbon cable are working (iTunes recognizes the device is in DFU mode after doing the hard reset with the sleep/wake button and the home button) but the screen is still staying black - even after doing a recovery update in iTunes.

I’ve tried using a few cracked screens as a testing device to see if they light up but still have the same results.

Is there another trick to try, or is this down to a failed chip?

Thanks for the tip.

As it turns out, I can see the faint image on the screen when I shine a light down it. Would trying another screen work, or is this more than likely the fuse?

If you have tried multiple screens that you know should light up, then no. I believe you have ruled out screen issues. If you have the equipment, the good news is this can be fixed by soldering across the two pads where the fuse used to be.

Thanks Jeff! Unfortunately I haven't worked myself up to micro-soldering yet and it seems the shops in the area that used to do it are shutting down due to lack of business. I'm getting busier with phone repairs now, but not quite to that point.

No problem glad I could help! It's not an easy repair by any means...

Hi @clilush

This could be a type of back light failure. If you hold a bright light up close to the LCD panel you will still be able to make out the iPhone home screen, assuming it is able to boot properly.

If you are able to see a faint picture on the screen, then most likely your issue is a failed back light fuse. This requires micro soldering to fix. I have attached an image showing the location of this fuse so you can check for physical damage.

Best of Luck!
