Seems pretty self-explanatory to me. You will need to install a new drive:

If so he telling you that it came with no hard drive

So it bound to give you a message like

“Hardrive not detect and no storage”

storage (Data) is stored on a Hard Drive

Every Mac has a specific serial number that is required for the many benefits that Apple offers to its customers, including warranty service. Most people won’t require the need of the serial number throughout their Mac’s life cycle, but you may need to occasionally look it up.

So you be looking for the model number of the unit to get parts for it
