have tried everything apart from a new hdd & doing a fresh install. can only get snow leopard disc to boot. hard drive failure? does the logic board need flashing?

I would reset the SMC and PRAM first, then try booting to working external hard drive or USB.
Also, try booting into Verbose mode so that you can see where it is hanging and restarting.

i have reset both. how do i get into verbose mode?

Please tell us what you have done. Your everything may not be as extensive as a trained techs everything.

sussed it, turned out the hard drive was also at fault. replaced hdd and reinstalled. works perfect!!

although sometimes i turn on the machine (with the battery in) the screen has the upper 1/4 cut of in a different grey, doesn't seem to do it when i remove the battery?
