What is the gold film under the glass?

So I am trying to do an glass only repair of my S8 Plus. I have taken it apart and removed the glass from the mid frame. Under the glass is a gold film with a ribbon at the bottom. Is this the digitizer? Do I remove the film? I have the glass only do I need to get a glass with digitizer or a whole new LCD? The glass I removed looked tinted the glass I have is clear and it looks just wrong it I put if over the gold film

Without pics I can’t be certain. But here are a few things I can let you know.

Glass is suppose to be clear. If you removed the Glass only it should also be clear with black borders. Your LCD that is still on the frame should be black (see image), if it does not look like that, you probably removed the Polarizer film along with the glass and it is still on the glass. In that case your LCD is damaged. Try testing to see. I also added an image of the LCD’s back side if it were removed from the frame.

If it isn't you removed the polarizer. The polarizer is bonded to the

glass., but surprisingly not the LCD, except for a sliver round the edges.

That's why everyone took it off so easily. The misleading answer about the gold bit being adhesive. Adhesive is also clear.

The gold sheet is actually the LCD.

The polarizer has thin glass attatched. The LCD doesn't.

The polarizer is attatched to the LCD and they work together.

The ribbons are shared.

If you took off the polarizer , you destroyed the LCD.

And no, there is no chance of buying them seperately.

If you look at the picture above, the gold on the back of the display is adhesive. I’m not sure why it’s gold however. As far as I know, you can rip it and the LCD and digitizer will still work. In our store, whenever we do screen repairs on any phone, we always get the glass and LCD as one component. I’ve never done a glass only repair but from what my understanding is, it’s a pain in the rear end and it’s not easy. You will spend more for a full display unit but you will thank yourself in the long run as it’s much easier to work with.

I have this question too, so I’ll provide additional information to what the OP shared.

The thin gold film appears to be directly under the glass (my glass is also tinted). It’s adhered to an underlying darker glass (presumably the LCD). In the pictures I’ve attached, you can see the gold film separated from the top glass, but still attached tot he bottom glass. The bottom glass that’s still on the phone looks similar to the picture @iyoungstai posted and called the LCD. In fact, if you look on the top-left corner of the picture I’m posting, you can see the gold film slightly separated from what appears to be an underlying glass area. I don’t think this gold film is the digitizer, but I could of course be very wrong. I’ve watched several YouTube videos and none shows this gold film. Can anyone please throw some light on what it could be?

Hi iyoungstai. I thought the pictures were attached and when I tried to edit to re-attach them, my post was deleted. Looks like the system thought it was spam. I’ll try re-attaching here again now - hopefully this doesn’t get deleted again.

@ryan_nyc yea, so that is part of the digitizer. and on that digitizer on the glass side would have the black tint which is the polarizer film. basically the screen is scrap now and cannot be fixed.

Oh wow... and to think I was extremely careful with this. I don't see how it's possible to remove the glass only then if this is the digitizer, being as it's so thin and attached to the glass. So sad. :(

I just saw a video on YouTube where a guy removed the back cover, battery and Sim card holder. Placed the phone in a freezer for maybe 30 minutes. When he removed it, the glue was hard and the glass pryed right off.

so @iyoungstai can the entire lcd and glass pre assembled unit be used to fix this or is the phone completely beyond repair if this happens

@ryan_nyc below is how it should look if the glass was removed correctly. Note that there should be glue residue but this one has been cleaned and is actually off the frame also.

This has just happened to me, I heated the glue under the screen and it came off much easier than expected. However, I now realise that the polarizer film came off with the glass too. So now I just have a phone unit with the gold on it. Is this salvageable (ie buy additional parts) or does it mean it all has to go in the bin now?
