MacBook Pro A1708 EMC 2978 powers on but no display

Hello I have a MacBook Pro A1708 EMC 2978 Late 2016 that powers on and I hear a little chime but there is no display.

It died in the middle of using it. Just poof, off, never came back on again. While I was using it nothing crazy like eating over it, spilled anything, happened.

I have tried many different key combinations that I have read on so many different forms that doesn't do the trick.

I have tried left buttons Shift, Control, Option, Power button, quick press. I hear a little chime when I do this. When I press the caps button, the green light turns on when I press it and off when I press it. But no display.

I have held down left buttons Shift, Control, Option, and Power button for 10 secs with and without the USB-C power connector. Again, I hear a little chime, no display.

I have unplugged power, disconnected the battery, held power for 10 secs, plugged in power. I hear a chime but nothing. I have done that….then….plugged in battery, hit power button, hear chime, nothing.

I have tried fn, control, command, power. Yes, I hear a chime when I try to turn it on but no display. Also tried left shift, fn, control, option, command, power. Again yes chime, no display. All this with and without power connected.

I have not tried an external display yet as I do not have that connector.

Am I just screwed and need a new logic board?

There’s no way to tell if you have a logic board issue without some testing. Both board or screen may be faulty and even plugging in an external monitor may be of little help as that would only confirm the image is produced but not if it reaches the screen connector. A known good screen would be needed here, but you can try shine a torch to the screen to check if you have an image but no backlight..in such a case a board issue would be more likely.

Yeah it's pointing towards the logic board being the issue, I'm pretty sure. Thank you for your help!

Can you first try the HUB with the video output and external monitor?

If it works then most probably it is T-CON board that is dead, not your motherboard, which is kind of good news, right? You could still use your Mac with the external monitor, or invest in the display assembly swap.
