and inserted it according to the directions I found online, but it is not showing on my storage screen nor have I been able to remove the card; what should I do?

You cannot remove it? This might be part of the problem... SD card trays usually eject the card after being pushed in slightly. Try to remove and install again making sure that the card is not flipped upside down.
