Why does my iPhone 7 overheat

Good Morning all,

So I got given an iPhone 7 to fix, Basically what is happening is it is getting so hot it causes the iPhone to warn you its got too hot and wait for it to cool down. My first thought something is shorting so let’s rule everything out, I put the board into an iPhone 7 that works perfectly and it still overheated so its a board issue. I do have some 99% alcohol on the way and my plan was wet the board, plug her in and wait for a part to dry and then that tells me what is overheating. It feels like the top back but i was wondering if this is a common issue and how anyone has managed to solve it.

Many thanks all

The most common fault for this warning on other models is the Wi-Fi IC I would start there first.

It sounds like a battery issue, you can try to replace the battery it may help.

That’s definitely a shorted component. :( I have a 7 that I am concerned is overheating but it rarely ever gives the temperature warning. What I would do is boot the phone with screen, battery, and logic board only to see which area gets hot. Then use a multimeter to determine if any power lines are shorted. Don’t get fooled if something like the PMIC gets hot; this is due to something else shorting a power line 99% of the time. Alcohol also really helps in these cases, especially because it it outputting a lot of heat. Once you find the source of the short, it really depends on what is causing it. If it is a capacitor on a big power line (with many others also on that line), you can just yeet it off with tweezers or an exacto knife (being gentle obviously). If it is a chip, the phone will probably need micro soldering work. Best of luck!

Get some freeze spray and turn it on and spray it and watch which part melts away it will tell you what area to start with. Do you have a microscope to work with it? A soldering station and a hot air station? You will most likely need these to micrsoldering. If you want to learn how to do this type of repair, I would recommend watching jessa at ipad rehab and Jason at sts telecom on YouTube. You can learn quite a lot watching them. If you are serious about learning you might want to purchase some equipment but be prepared it's not cheap. You might also might be interested in purchasing a membership for the wire schematics, they are about 70 dollars for a year membership

Nope it's as soon as it turns on, I'm wondering if a chip is getting to much power

par

have you done any sort of upgrades to it by any chance

Nope it was all original, i have since tried a working shell with all the parts from a Iphone 7 that dosent over heat and it will does the same.

it could be your processor overheating also even when your phone is off docent mean its totally off

I've got all the tools now so I'm doing a learning experience and going to trace all of the contacts and find what's shorting :)
