Key won't go back in properly (butterfly keyboard)

Hi there, my T key on my Macbook Pro has fallen off. The key looks 100% in tact: the two top clips don’t seem damaged, and the two bottom hooks don’t seem damaged.

However when I try and put it back into place, I can’t get it to “click” in. Has the butterfly mechanism broken? It’d be great if I can try fix this myself as it’s currently lockdown in the UK so can’t get to an Apple store - I also fear it’s an expensive fix otherwise.

Don't forget Apple has a free repair program for systems with butterfly keyboards.

par

I've used it so many times they won't do it again for me now!

@Samuel Franklin - Remind them! Its a free repair under this program! Keyboard Service Program for MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro Make sure you are going to either an Apple Store or authorized Apple reseller as they will fix this and if this is the third time the will likely exchange the full uppercase! Which gets you a fresh battery as well.

Don't lose out of a free repair!

A few notes about the program from a local Apple repair shop that I called. First, they program will end at some point, and like your warranty, the end date is based on your purchase date. When mine was run by the shop, it noted August of this year is the end for my MBP. Another thing is they WILL NOT repair it if you have replaced the battery (I replaced my battery a few months back). In fact, if they feel like you've been in there much at all, there's a good chance it will be returned without being fixed.

I had the same problem with my T key also - the top wouldn’t “click” in. Searched online for ages and couldn’t find an answer.

I then took off a different key cap and attached it in the place of the T and it fitted perfectly. So this narrowed it down to the key itself and not the mechanism.

As a last ditch attempt I squeezed the tiny “C” shaped clips at the top of the T key between my fingernails (these are different to the hooks at the bottom). I didn’t think it did anything, but to my surprise there was resistance when I went to put it back on, and it now works!

TL;DR: Try to squeeze the tiny clips together at the top of the key between your fingernails (or gently with some needle nose pliers maybe). The goal is to make them slightly tighter. They must slightly distort with use. It doesn’t take much, so don’t overdo it!

This fixed it! Cannot thank you enough.

This worked for me! Thank you so much. Just needed to lightly pinch the two top clips.

This fixed it for me too!! Thank you so much

Again, this 100% fixed it! Thank you!

Awesome! This worked and now it clicked when replaced. I guess those clips will eventually break, but as long as it works for now, I'm grateful for this solution.

Turn the key over and see if it has a little plastic “scissor” attached. If it does, and it's not broken, lift the scissor carefully off of the key and reattach it to the keyboard by hooking it under the tab on the right-hand side, and then fastening the two little plastic hooks into the catches on the left side.

Hi Albert, it doesn't look like it has a scissor. I've added a photo to help. Thank you!

I’m having this exact same issue. Like OP’s key, mine looks completely fine, it just doesn’t want to click back in. The butterfly mechanism is still attached to the keyboard. I insert the key like shown in the video, and when I press on the top corners, it just doesn’t click into place. The hooks on the cap and the taps on the white butterfly part look fine. As far as I can tell, it looks exactly the same as in OPs pictures.

I have this exact same issue. Everything looks fine on the F key, but it won't click into place so it periodically pops out.
