What is the model number of the TV?

Have you tried a different input, input type (coax, HDMI Component video etc) or signal source e.g. a dvd player to see if the problem is still there or not?

Try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen and check for any images on the screen, when the TV is on and there is audio. The images will be very faint if they're there so trying this in a darkened room may help to see them if they are there.

If you can see a display when using a torch then there is a backlight problem.
