Torn cable behind the battery

I was replacing the battery on my XR today, and the adhesive got stuck. I pried the battery out with a screwdriver (foolish, I know) and tore the cable behind the battery.

Now, the phone is turning on fine, but won’t charge at all. What can I do here?

My dad did the same thing with my phone, i left him alone 30 minutes and told him to not break anything. He demolished the cable behind the battery and the wireless charging is scraped but i think it works, but he completely tore the cable, i can’t find what part i need to buy😭

You will have to replace the cable but that shouldn’t lead to not charging of the phone.

There might be some other fault that is not letting your phone charge or it even might be a bad battery or even a bad charging dock flex so you will have to diagnose the issue but the possibilities are endless so probably I can help you fix this issue.

Cheers!

Sounds good, I'll order a new charging dock tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem. What is the cable I tore used for, though? And how would I go about replacing it? Thanks!

Well lookup on YouTube how to replace iPhone XR wireless charging coil, If im not wrong the cable you tore is used to connect the wireless charging coil to the board. I'm not 100% sure tho

Gotcha. Thank you!

Hi @sarah98397,

That cable seems to have something to do with the compass, the phone case cover auto lock screen, or possibly the NFC function. It's soldered onto the wireless charging coil and provides the connector going to the motherboard. You may be able to buy that cable separately from the charging coil, but I wouldn't recommend it, as removing and reinstalling it requires a delicate hand with a soldering iron; I know I tried it once myself but ended up burning up the flex cable by using a soldering station I wasn't familiar with. Much easier to just buy one already assembled. Unfortunately, the one iFixit sells requires soldering, so I wouldn't recommend that one. Here's an example of the one you want with the two parts already soldered together.

Apple :: iPhone Repair Parts :: iPhone XR Parts :: iPhone XR Wireless NFC Charging Flex

You'll have to remove, at a minimum, the motherboard and the battery to get to the charging coil for replacement. I couldn't find any iFixit style guides for your phone, but there's a YouTube video that seems to be pretty well done and has all the information you need to get the job done.

Here’s how to replace iPhone XR wireless charge coil - YouTube

Hopefully that'll get you going! Let us know how it turns out.

Yup right where that circle is i done the exact same thing using a spudger

After testing the phone briefly the only problem i think ive found is that the compass doesnt work, and obviously the face id doesnt work as i replaced the top ear speaker to get out of bootloop

All buttons working fine

Just waiting to test if sim card still works

The cable is for the compass or the phone case cover auto lock screen, see if those still works.

Although you're right that the part is pretty much destroyed, the good news is that it looks like it's only that part and following the instructions I posted for replacing it should get your phone working just fine again.

It's quite possible you may be able to use the phone almost normally without replacing it, although of course your wireless charging and probably the NFC and compass won't work either, but given you've already got the phone open, really all you have to do at this point is remove the motherboard and you should be able to get to it to replace it.
