Stopped on 'rinse' with buzzing sound, why

kenmore 417.98702891 youtube suggested it was the coupler, but i can’t even find it. I pulled out the motor, but didn’t see it or any sign of it.

machine is 20 years old. I was running a small load, drum was filled to small level. I took all items out, let it sit for a long time, still didn’t run.

I can’t afford to replace it, can’t even really afford to fix it, certainly can’t afford to pay someone to come out and not be able to fix it…

the dial is directly pointing to rinse.

Hi @zinniab ,

Just verifying that the washer fills OK, agitates OK but when it comes to the rinse part of the cycle that it doesn’t drain but just buzzes, is this correct?

If so it sounds like there may be a problem with the drain pump - part #43 Tub, basket and agitator Diagram

Check that there is nothing jamming the pump impeller preventing it from operating correctly.

The dial is on the "regular" setting. Has numbers 15,12,8,4......then has a dot at "rinse" the dial is stopped exactly on Rinse. I was in the next room when it was running, I assume it ran normally until that point. Looked to be filled a typical amount for a small load......The pump looks easy enough to get off,...just waiting for the dirty towels to dry on my heaters to help catch the water. Previous load ran fine. The smallest thing in this load was a couple wash clothes, nothing seems to be missing....nothing had pockets that something could have been left in.

I assume I am supposed to remove the nuts to take the pump off, they don't seem to be coming off.....I wish this site allowed pics.

Here's how to add images to your QUESTION on ifixit

Ajout d'images à une question existante

Try applying some WD-40 to the nuts and leaving it for 12-24hrs as this should loosen them. After 20+years no doubt they are frozen (rusted?) in position.

You may have no choice. If the pump is not blocked it may be faulty and have to be replaced anyway and it has to come out.
