Two new batteries don't work, the old one does

Hello,

I decided to replace the battery of my MacBook because of poor performance. I followed the steps in the guide, everything seemed well-executed, but when I assembled everything again my MacBook most of the time didn't turn on (with or without the power). It only did after I insisted several times (with the power charger connected), but:

  • The system didn't detect the battery at all
  • OS X menu bar showed an “X” on the battery symbol
  • coconutBattery tool could not show any info on the battery

I tried to reset SMC and PRAM: I needed many attempts to start my MacBook again after those operations, but when it finally turned on, the situation didn't change. I also tried to keep it charging for some hours, but nothing happened, and when I unplugged the power the MacBook died.

I tried to check the battery installation, disconnecting and reconnecting contacts and data cable, but no results.

At that point, I decided to try to remove the new battery and reinstall the old one: my MacBook immediately started to work again, so I concluded that the new battery was defective. The customer service agreed to send a new battery.

Now I installed the second battery, but it is exactly like the first one: my MacBook doesn't turn on at all. After reinstalling the original battery everything worked again.

My question is: what am I doing wrong? Is it possible that I received two defective batteries? The MacBook is fine because the old battery works! Is there anything I am missing? I want to be sure I did everything correctly before giving up.

UPDATE 2021-02-13 (1)

I could turn on my MacBook with the second battery after 1 hour of attempts. I post here some screenshots:

You can see the first battery listed is the first one I bought, the second one is the original battery, the third one is the new battery Customer Service sent me to replace the first one.

I tried to reset the SMC (Comment réinitialiser le SMC, PRAM et NVRAM sur un portable Mac): of course the macbook didn’t turn on again immediately, it took another 30 minutes of attempts, but when I succeeded the situation didn’t change.

UPDATE 2021-02-13 (2)

Ok, apparently there’s an update for Big Sur which seems related to my issue :/

I’ll try to install it and see if it works.

UPDATE 2021-02-14

After Big Sur update my battery still doesn’t charge and the MacBook dies if I disconnect power adapter.

CoconutBattery shows something different

I tried again to reset SMC and PRAM with no results. I installed again the old battery and it works.

Where did you get your battery/s?

@danj ifixit store. Of course there's always the chance of 2 defective batteries, but I suspect there's something else.

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Ajout d'images à une question existante. If you can let's get both new batteries.

@danj I can try, but I have to say my MacBook most of the time doesn't turn on with the new batteries: with the first one it did it a couple of times in 2 hours of attempts; with the second one I think I gave up after 10 minutes. I've already installed CoconutBattery to check the results with the first battery, but unfortunately I didn't think to take a screen, so I can only describe what I could see: the battery was not detected at all and no info about it was available.

I'll try to install again the second battery and hope the MacBook decides to turn on.

Thank you for your help :)
