Replace USB and USB C Ports

Hi All,

I watched the tear down video of the Surface pro 7, which i own one of.

Just thinking to the future, i see the Surface Connect Port is easily replaceable, and i also noticed that the USB ports are soldered to the motherboard its self.

My question is, if and only if the USB C port wears out for any given reason as some of them seem to do. Can you remove the motherboard and solder on a new USB port, or USB C port. Hopefully never have to do it, but i would assume that the ports are a standard item.

Thanks

You should be able to get a skilled micro soldering tech to get it done but some repair shops don’t like to work on surface products because of their finicky nature.

Mind you, this isn’t something you can or should try. Micro soldering does require a bit of practice and you can quickly and easily mess up your electronics if you don’t know what you’re doing. Here’s an example on how it’s done but with a PS4 HDMI port. I also took a course from Jessa a couple years back and she’ll pop up here in the iFixit forums from time to time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlHuqoX2...
