Replace the larger keys

Hi, I’ve seen a couple of answers on here about removing and replacing the keycaps.

I spilt lemonade on my keyboard - luckily all the keys still worked but they were sticky. I decided to remove the keys, clean the keys with water and the switches with alcohol. The small letter keys are easy to remove and replace, but the larger keys (command, control etc) with the metal bars, I just can’t seem to get back on - when I try the keys get stuck all the way down. Has anyone got any tips on how to reapply these keys?

Many thanks in advance :D

usually with bigger keys theres a metal bar \ spring under since they weigh more the switch cant push the key back up. check and see if you can work the metal bar in there

Update (03/28/2021)

it should clip in like this

so the metal bar needs to go UNDER the little hook on the board

Hi, thanks for your reply. They keys do have metal stabilisers, I've tried to follow videos and tutorials to get them back on but they just seem to get stuck down.

@Ben Tomsett can you take some pictures of the board where the key attaches to

there are usually tabs that are in there to hold them implace. if it doesnt work i have a feeling that plastic pieces may be broken off :(

As far as I can tell, everything's going in fine - the hooks on the metal bar were going under the hooks on the board, and it all clicks down, but it just doesn't spring back up when pressed. The scissor mechanism doesn't stay 'up' like the other keys do when I pull it up manually. I've got a genius bar appointment tomorrow to see if they can fix it but who knows :( thanks for the help @logixal

@logixal here are pictures of the underside of they keycaps and the switches, and that the keys look like when I try and reattach. Hoping they’re still fine and I’m just doing something wrong to avoid a trip to Apple :(

It looks like the key attaches to everything fine but just doesn't want to retract back up when pressed down, I have to 'manually' pull the key back up.

@Ben Tomsett im not sure then, you might need to replace the white plastic piece that is under the key on the board itself
