How to troubleshoot the lightning connector?

My Iphone 6s was idle for sometime. Recently I tried switching it on , and it wasn’t working. I checked the charging cable/charge, tried charging using a laptop (Charging cable/charger are fine, checked with another iphone). Nothing helped. When I connected with a laptop running Itunes, my device was not recognized. Another observation is, while the charging cable is connected, the phone is not seem to be charging as the temperature of the phone remains same/cold. No observation of appearing apple logo or anything that signals the phone is not completely dead. I wonder whether it is due to the bad ligtning port or a software glitch! How can i be sure of the origin of this problem and bring my phone alive. I welcome your suggestions to trouble shoot.

i’d seen this issue before, when a phone simply won’t juice up.

if you can get your hands on a USB Ammeter (<$10 on amazon or ebay) you can see if the phone is actually drawing current through the usb/lightning cable.

the next step is to try a new battery. i’ve had several phones come across my bench that were so discharged, even when plugged in to a 2.1A (iapd) a/c brick, you don’t even get the empty battery with the thin red line on the screen. put a different battery with some charge and it powered right up. at that point, it’s 50/50 if you can actually get the old battery over the hump to take a charge. sometimes putting that battery into a different phone worked, sometimes it didn’t.

i’ve read articles about a chip in the motherboard and/or a chip in the battery that gets to a point where it just can’t charge the battery. the good news is that batteries (and the tools to open your phone) can be found here on ifixt, ebay, amazon, injuredgadgets, etc. and are not that expensive. ebay will likely be the cheapest, but unless you’re an experienced ebay shopper and phone geek, you’re probably better off paying more and buying from a place that will give some level of support.

do take advantage of the guides and resources here on ifixt to give you what you need to know about how to do the battery replacement

USB Ammeters are a must for troubleshooting chargers and cables. As BC noted, inexpensive and can ID if you have a bad cable or charger.

Ensure plastic part of lightning connector sits flush when plugged in.

If it doesnt, there may be debris in the end of the Jack.

Try a tooth pick or a plastic floss pick to remove dirt at the bottom of the port.

The lightning cord should push in and click into place, with the connector plastic flush against the bottom of the phone

If it's been sat around with a dead battery for a cert amount of time, the phone will not draw enough current to charge the battery.

You have 2 options:

New battery

Or iPhone battery recovery board, usually powered via a usb lead/phone charger, and battery connects to this small board, and is able to trickle charge the battery, until it's able to draw the 1-2 amps it usually takes to charge. Once you hit that, you can leave it to charge with that for a while which you'll notice the current draw will drop slowly as it charges, or plug it straight into the phone, and carry on as normal.

Without readout: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/W223-PRO-Fast...

Or one with a Voltage & current readout:
