Why won't the Microphone work?

Try using the phone in loudspeaker mode or insert a set of earphones with a microphone attachment to the headset connector on the phone and check if you can be heard OK when on a call.

If you can be heard then as you say there is a problem with the phone’s internal microphone when using the phone in the normal way on a call.

Use a magnifying glass and a strong light to visually inspect the voice inlet hole, located on the bottom edge of the phone to the right of the charge port, to see if it is blocked with lint etc.

If it appears to be blocked or you’re not sure, do not use a pin or metal probe to try and clear it as you may damage the microphone which is behind the hole. Try using a vacuum cleaner to try and clear it.

If still no good the phone will have to be opened and the microphone checked to find out what’s wrong. Here’s an image taken from the Ifixit Remplacement de l'écran du Motorola Moto E5 Play guide, showing the location of the microphone.
