Turning over means the starter is good. Turn the key to ON without starting it, and should hear a bit of noise from the fuel pump turning on then off. If not, could be the engine isn’t getting any fuel. To test further, disconnect a fuel line, and have someone turn the key to On momentarily and see if fuel spurts out. If not, then it’s likely the fuel pump, which is in the fuel tank…

First it could be flooded, take out the spark plugs, remove the fuel pump relay and act as if you were going to turn it on, clean the spark plugs and put it in, and put in the fuel pump relay, check the coils. The spark plugs could not send a spark, since they do not ignite the mixture of gasoline and air, it could be a second alternative.

Sounds like A cam-position sensors or crank position sensors . You do have gas Wright ?

hernandezsean240 it's a rotary engine. No cam, no crankshaft, no valves, no timing gears= no sensors for that. Check on here for a better explanation

Tricia Tumele could be a fuel or spark issue. You changed the spark plugs but need to check the coils as well. Remember that the 04/04 RX 8 had a TPB about using different plugs then listed in the manual. Make sure your replacement reflects that. It also is having chronic issues with flooding which can get the catalytic converter to clog and fail. Have that checked too. As for possible fuel issues you need to check the relay, the fuses, and the pump itself. This is a great car but needs a lot of personal attention. Here is the troubleshooting guide from the manual which may help out. It’s a ‘05 which works for the ‘04 as well. 2005 RX8 EngineProblem

Aside from what has been talked about above, you might want to consider a clogged fuel filter. If it hasn't been changed, and is relatively easy to access, it's a good maintenance item to replace anyway at 95K miles, IMO. A fuel starved engine will run lean, and therefore will run hotter, so you might smell that this is happening, as you sort of described. It will also hiccup a bit.

If it's spark related, then it could very well be the CKP, aka the crank position sensor. That said, these are usually a real bear to get to for the unseasoned mechanic in particular. With many cars easiest access to potentially failed part can be a prime determinant in how one goes about fixing things. Good luck with your Mazda.

This car is a rotary, which means you should ignore advice from anyone who doesn’t acknowledge that first.

The RX-8 has an annoying habit of flooding if it is started and shut down before warming up. My RX-8 is sitting in my driveway with this exact problem right now. I suggest investing in a battery charger, as it is a good thing to have with this car. Search YouTube for “RX-8 de flood procedure” there are probably a dozen videos on the subject
