My 1948 GE Refrigerator is running WAY too cold

Been using it for 20 years and has always run pretty cold, but was manageable. Since moving to a different locale (from high desert to wet part of the state), it took about six months to start running alarmingly cold. It's turned all the way down, one "hair" above the defrost marking. Things in fridge are freezing. PLEASE HELP! I love my old fridge!

connies do you have an exact model number for your fridge?

I can get that for you! We did end up blowing it out (and making a mess through-out the entire house) and man, did alot of dirt come out. It seems to be running fine. It purrs like a kitten now when it IS on, and definitely doesn't run as much as it was.

Okay, here's what I found:

Type NF-10-EC

N.P.117869-A

FD-103-AB16 N

Hope this helps. Thank you!!!

Nice! No auto defrost, No Bluetooth, not frills just doing it's job :-) Anyhow, those fridges just kept running until cold then stopped and only came back on when needed. Since yours got to cold I would suggest you take a look at the thermostat. It's possible that you just got a bunch of stuff in there. If it runs okay now, leave well enough alone and enjoy the nostalgia.

Thank you! We figured it might be fine now. I'm only the second owner, and plan to have it for many more years to come. They don't make things to last like they used to...no money in it! Thanks for your help :)

You may find this page useful in diagnosing the problem and hopefully fixing it, if not just holler for more help. Edit: THAT video won't do instead I offer this refurbishment of a 1948 GE fridge in it's stead and this service manual for GE fridges of that era which should come really close if not quite on target... by the way, yes, definitely keep it running they assuredly don't make them like that anymore!

@uchetil it's a 1948 model year so the video may not be as acurate :-) Here is the user information

@oldturkey03 You are, of course correct, I was thinking that until l got results for a model, not the year I was expecting... but NOT appropriately so... it would seem. Change it to a comment sir, I can't seem to.

@uchetil just expand on it and I am sure there is some information that your answer could address.
