How can I tell if the laser and disk tray motor are dead?

So I bought a ps2 off ebay to find out that the disk tray won't eject and the ps2 home screen has that browser thing on it (can't remember what it's called sorry). So I've taken it apart to see what happens when I press the eject button with it on and the laser does absolutely nothing (no light or movement) and I cant hear or see the console even attempting to open the disk tray. So I'm thinking that both the laser and motor are broken? I'm new to this so, any helpful info or advice on what else to check would be great. PS: i have the SCPH-50003 model if that's any help
