Why is my 2004 sequoia not moving backwards

I am able to switch my gears to whatever I want, but the issue I’m having is that my car isn’t reversing and I can’t even push it backwards while on neutral. What issue can this be and how do I fix it?

Can you put it on drive and drive it forward? May be your shift linkage has broken/come loose at the transmission or the shifter, so that it will move as though you're changing gear, but the transmission isn't actually changing.
