Thanks for the referral, @flannelist, but they've completely changed the volume button arrangement on the 12. On the X, the flex cable crossed over the back of the phone, stopping at the charging coil, then went to the motherboard on the opposite side.
On the 12, however, they switched the logic board to the left side of the phone. The cable now goes to the power button as well, so all four buttons are now on a single flex cable connected to the charging coil.
Replacing it will require removing the battery and the motherboard, just like on the X. I'd do a guide on it, but I don't happen to own an iPhone 12. However, others have done a video guide; here's one that looks reasonable on YouTube.
IPhone 12 volume side button flex replacement
If you prefer written, step by step directions, you can use the iFixit guides for the Battery, Front-Facing Cameras and Rear-Facing Cameras to get through the first part of that video, then follow along the video for the rest.
Many of the replacement flex cables I've seen do not come with the charging coil; I would strongly suggest getting one that is already soldered to the charging coil. For example, here's one on Amazon that would work.

Hope this helps, @paulc. Holler if you need any help along the way and let us know how it goes.

I should have added the reason for needing this replacement is that my volume button up does not work.
Thank you
