NFC reading stopped working but Apple Pay still works

I recently replaced the battery on my iPhone Xs, but noticed that although Apple Pay still works, I can’t read NFC chips using apps such as NFC Tools. Is there any fix to this?

@simonkapicka, When you removed the old battery, is there any chance your tool(s) slipped and you damaged a flex cable or disconnected a connector inadvertently? Some of those antenna flexes (as most flexes are) very easily damaged, and even the slightest damage can stop functionality.

It sucks to have to do it, but you’ll probably have to open the phone up again and inspect all connections and flex cables. If you can’t see any obvious damage, using high magnification will help. Then I’d disconnect the cables before reseating them, making absolutely sure that they’re fully seated.

Before gluing the phone back together, always power the phone up and check all functionality, as this will save you from having to open it up yet again. (We’ve all done it at least once! It’s just the nature of how these repairs go.)

@geirandersen it’s possible that happened, as I was extracting the battery (after the pull tabs broke off, unfortunately) my pry tool slipped and punctured the old battery, making it smoke. It’s possible I hit something, but this was at the bottom of the battery, maybe 8mm from the bottom edge, is there any NFC reading component down there?

@simonkapicka It would help if you fex found an image of an open iPhone XS and then marked on the image, what and where. Then update you question with image, as that helps visualise.

@geirandersen there’s an update, I replaced the NFC antenna at the top of the iPhone and it worked for a couple of minutes after closing the phone up, but then I tried again and it hasn’t worked since. Could it be a damaged connector on the logic board that permanently damages the NFC antenna?
