It is likely bad feed rollers. The rubber drys out over time and hardens them becoming like a plastic rather than pliable rubber . You can try reconditioning the feed rollers by cleaning them (I use Fedron to clean them, but isopropyl alcohol will work in a pinch, albeit not as well as alcohol drys them out even more), but this will likely only be a temporary fix. Replacing the rollers are a better option.

Word of warning. DO NOT try to turn the rollers by hand. You may jam up the clutches/solenoids that way. I recommend hitting the print switch and shutting the machine off just as the rollers are trying to pull the paper in. That way the rollers will be in the feed position for you to clean them.

Overwhelmingly useful reply! BTW, the HP 6700 Premium printer was purchased at least 15 years ago (in Switzerland) and it has been in (USA) storage for the last 7 years. Luckily, the scanner still works extrememly well is - w/ or w/o cartridges :). And yes, used a torch to watch the rollers turn freely and grind without feeding a sheet. I forced about 15 sheets of paper through > caused a huge jam > cleared it completely > restarted > no more load paper msg > but no joy feeding :( Are there any videos showing how to replace the paper feed rollers - where to source new rollers? The hardcopy user manual is in 8 languages, none are English. No joy "googling" it. Printer doesn't even show up on the HP support page :(

I would check to see if there is a portion of paper stuck somewhere. Sometimes just a corner of paper can mess the whole thing up. Be sure when removing stuck paper, you reassemble the whole sheet if anything tears. I once had the copy not work because there was a piece about the size of 2 quarters that was stuck in the rollers. Hardly big enough to see, but enough to mess up my printer.

Good point!!! I would only add that, if there is a torn piece of paper (or maybe even a paper clip/staple) in the paper path entry, often there will be a bend on the leading edge of the page being fed. A good way to find out is to hand feed the page through the paper path to the next set of rollers (usually called the registration rollers). If you can get the paper to the second set (reg rollers) of rollers, then the issue is at the feed rollers. If not, then there is a blockage in the paper path.
