Scenario 1: The Key Won't Turn in the Ignition Switch
- Steering Lock Engagement: If the steering wheel is locked hard against one side, it puts mechanical pressure on the ignition cylinder. Firmly wiggle the steering wheel left and right while turning the key.
- Worn Key Blade or Tumblers: The 4D/46/HU101 laser-cut keys on these models wear down over time. Try a spare key if available. If the key is worn, spraying a tiny amount of dry graphite lubricant into the cylinder can temporarily help, but the ignition cylinder or key blade will eventually need replacement.
- Gear Position: Ensure the gear selector is fully in Park (P) or Neutral (N) (or that the clutch is completely depressed for manuals).
Scenario 2: Key Turns, Engine Cranks, but Will Not Start
- Immobilizer (PATS) Fault: Look at the instrument cluster. If the small padlock security light flashes rapidly when you turn the key to the "ON" position, the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) is not recognizing the transponder chip inside your key.
- Fix/Troubleshooting: A dead key fob battery does not stop the transponder chip from reading on physical key models (the chip is passive), but a damaged key shell or missing chip will. If using a push-to-start model with a dead fob, hold the fob directly against the backup marking on the side of the steering column to start it.
Scenario 3: Key Turns, Single Click or Complete Silence
- Dead 12V Battery / Bad Terminal Connection: A very common issue on the MK3 Focus is corrosion or a loose connection at the main battery negative terminal / chassis ground point.
- Faulty Starter Relay or Neutral Safety Switch: Check the starter relay in the engine bay fuse box (Underhood Fuse Box).
- Focus Transmission Control Module (TCM) Issue: Dual-clutch automatic MK3 Focus models frequently suffer from TCM failures. If the TCM fails, the car won't recognize that it's in Park, preventing the starter from engaging entirely. Try shifting to Neutral and starting from there.

Do you mean the key won't turn in the ignition, or that it turns but the car doesn't start?
Does the starter crank over, do you get a clicking noise, or does nothing happen?
