Externa Esata drive using dual HD kit

I've just got an SSD and am going to swap out my main HD in my mini for the SSD but was wondering if I can use your dual HD kit cable to extent the esata port outside of the mac to a large 3TB drive. Obviously I'd have to provide some strain relief and drill a hole in the mini but was wondering if this is indeed possible.

I've given up on Thunderbolt, too expensive and everyone seems to be dragging their feet on producing a simple enclosure so I'm going back to esata.
