Samsung smart TV (ue50tu8070uxzg) stuck in boot loop

Edit: I.'ve added some more recent information at the bottom.

Original question:

My TV started getting stuck in a boot loop. The standby LED blinks twice, the LCD turns on for about a second (no picture) and then turns off again and the process restarts.

It's an issue that I've seen in other places on the web and multiple solutions are proposed. What seems to work for me is to tweak the ribbon cable connecting the LCD to the motherboard, but it doesn't seem to work for the long term.

What I've done:

  • Open back cover, remove ribbon connector and turn on TV. The screen stays on but there is no picture obviously.
  • Place a piece of sticky tape on a few of the ribbon cable pins (a fix I found in some online video), replace the ribbon cable and turn on the TV. Typically I get a picture but it's only noise. Covering different pins give slightly different results.
  • Remove the tape altogether and reconnect the ribbon cable. Turn on tv. Screen works again, though no idea why. At this point I put everything back together and thought it was fixed (there are a few blackish horizontal lines on the screen but it's not so bad). [EDIT: this doesn't seem to work anymore, or perhaps just requires too much patience. See below for more information.]
  • One hour later, turn on TV to realize the initial issue is occurring again. Repeated the whole operation and last time I checked it worked, though I'm afraid perhaps not for long.

My questions:

  • Any input/information regarding this issue would be highly appreciated.
  • Specifically, it seems to me that the ribbon cable may be the culprit here. Should I try replacing it? Other ideas on how to perhaps fix it? I've tried wiping it gently but that doesn't seem to do anything.
  • Any idea why the heck the TV works again after sticking tape on the pins? Could it be the contact isn't snug enough? Should I try sticking tape at the back of the cable to increase the pressure when latching?

Thanks for any ideas/answers. TV is just above 2 years old btw, issue started just as the warranty expired of course...

[EDIT] I'm sorry I meant to post pictures but time flies.. Been using the TV for a couple of months now using the tape off trick, a bit of a pain but works every time:

What I need to do is tape off the cable and turn on the TV. I get a picture but there quite a few parasite horizontal lines. After a few minutes the screen starts turning purple, starting from the center and extending gradually towards the edges. When the screen is all nice and purple, I turn off the TV, remove the piece of tape and turn it back on, then it works until the next time I turn it off.

I've been looking to try and replace the ribbon cable but no luck finding one online so far (ref sfpcx495g-002). Still unsure what is the root cause (cable or LCD)

@wawrzeniec looks good and it is working, which is the main objective. The Tape-off is tricky since it could really be anyone of the data lines, sometimes even multiple on different pins. Is's pretty time consuming and frustrating to figure it out. You did a good job there!

@wawrzeniec this ". What seems to work for me is to tweak the ribbon cable connecting the LCD to the motherboard" needs more explanation. Like "tweak the ribbon cable" means what. From all that you are describing, it sounds like you tried a tape off but again , OI am not to sure if that is what you did.

What I did not see is if you check the boards, the power output, the backlights, etc. If you are up to it, start from scratch. Post a couple of good, focused, clear, and large pictures of your boards with your question. Let's see what you have here. sure it could be your panel, but it could also be a few other things like your main board etc. Remember that a panel that can be "fixed" commonly does not cause an error code and a shutdown.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm sorry it didn't hit me to take pictures until I decided to post the question here, but I will make sure to take some next time and add them here.

Regarding tweaking the ribbon cable, what I did is exactly what I described in the steps I posted, no more no less. I said "tweak "for lack of a better term, because I don't see how anything I did could result in the TV working, but since I did twice I suspect there is a causal relationship.

I did check the boards quickly for signs of damage or bulging capacitors, but as far as I can tell they look mighty fine.

I assume the power board is not damaged because when the ribbon cable is unplugged, the panel stays on - please feel free to correct me if that assumption is incorrect.

A couple of hours after my last manipulation, the TV is still working. I did mention that there are a few visible horizontal lines that are visible in the upper half of the screen, I'm not sure if anything can be said from that.

Also thank you very much for your reply and I will update this with any new developments, and make sure to add pictures.

Comment was too long, had to split it in two.

@wawrzeniec sounds good. So your "tweak " is the tape off. When you plug the ribbon cable into the LCD and it prevents your TV from turning on properly, it is usually the panel that shortens out the power board. But there are a few IC's on the power board that can cause this (as well as bad ribbon cables) too. Hence, always check both, never assume since that can get expensive by buying wrong or unnecessary parts:-). About those horizontal lines, you can try and tape off some other pins and see if that improves.

The interesting part is that your Samsung knows the panel is not working correctly. Commonly, they just turn the backlight on and stay without picture. Looks like there is now some sort of feedback loop. Great, since Samsung and all others have issues with the panels on the larger screens. I do hope the "fix" will last for a good while. After all, it's a pretty new TV.

Hi all,

I do have the same problem with my GQ50q60TQU.

Removing the big cable from board to screen avoids the the device to boot loop and I hear the boot sounds. Once back plugged in same thing and the device loops again and again.

Do you think then replacing the cable does the trick?

Block Image

Also I found out, that only removing the small flat cable on the bottom, has same impact as removing the big flat (Bn96-39821F). Meaning: if the big flat is connected and only small one not, the device seems to boot including sound as mentioned initially. I also see the device in the Samsung android app btw.

UPDATE:

Found this Video on YT and tried to apply to mine device. But here also still no luck.
Disconnected:
BLU_PWM2 itself then BLU_PWM1 and BLU_PWM" together and also as a try ANA_DIM. Last alone and together with the BLU's

@pking11exactly what problem does your TV have? Replacing the LVDS cable can work if it is an issues with data going from the main board to the panel. It will all depend on what problems your TV has.

par

@oldturkey03 once you plug the power cord in, the TV starts for a few seconds thens shuts down again. No logo no picture. Then it starts again automatically after a few seconds and same thing over and over again. Like an endless boot loop.

However, If I unplug the flat cable from the main unit to display, I can hear the boot sound and back light stays on. I do also see the device on the Samsung app on my phone.

par

@pking11 okay so that sounds like your display is being an issue with the the rest of the power on self test. Yes, try a different cable. The other thing we would need to see is the legend on your power board where the main board connects to. I wonder if there is a contact we can disable to see if the TV turns on. Do one more test. disconnect the power cord, disconnect the main board and then reconnect the power board. See if your backlights come on. You should see those through the holes in the sheet metal on the back of the display panel.

par

@oldturkey03 thanks. So as you suggested I disconnected the main board from power board and powered on. Backlight is on. See imagery. Also a pic from the power board.

Had to update my post with pictures above.

The cable I need to find on eBay etc.

I have the problem. Keep boot looping. I’ve changed the main and power board. Still no fix. Tried the tape method tv turns on but no pic. Plug the right ribbon in loops again. What the next fix? Help me please?.
