@kathydudley that is a very tough question to answer. There are 100's of different reasons why this could be happening. Remember, that in order for your engineer to start, you need three thing. Air, fuel and a spark. So, check to make sure that your engine does get air. Clean air filter, remove it and see if the air intake is clear of any obstacle.

After that, pull a spark plug and hold it against ground while you crank your engine. See if you get spark. Of course, do not hold it with your hands etc. since you may just get zapped. You can also use an external spark plug and check all of your cylinders. One at a time and after you test it, push the spark plug cable back on the spark plug. You do not want to mess/mix up the cables.

Next you will have to see if you got fuel. Can you hear your fuel pump hum when you turn the key into the ignition and turn it to the acces position (last step before starting it)? If you can hear it, there might be an issue with it. Like I said, Not an easy question to answer since there are so many things that come into play here.

Let us know what engine size and exact year your Grand Am is. Try one thing at a time and see what does or does not work.
