PS3 display output glitching before freezing

Block Image

Recently, my PS3 has been acting up.

During play (sometimes after an hour or so, sometimes at startup) the PlayStation will freeze and all kinds of graphical glitches will show up and cycle on the screen, such as the one pictured. Any musical audio will continue to play, but the console becomes unresponsive to anything except the eject button and the power button.

I have tried rebuilding the database, and just about everything in the safe mode menu. I have also verified it's the console having the issue as it happens on my other TVs and with different HDMI cables. I even tried another power cable, just to hit all of the bases I could think of.

I'm familiar with electronics repairs, but I'm not familiar with the PS3 infrastructure, so if there's something I can do to repair this, I'd love to take care of it myself.

I've read elsewhere that the thermal compound used on PS3s is less than awesome. I haven't really paid attention to the PS3's average operating temperature, so I'm not sure if that's the issue or not, but it doesn't seem hotter than your typical console after an hour or two of usage.

Hoping I don't have to junk it and get a replacement.

Note: I got this PS3 from a friend who had to replace the drive in the console as the factory drive died, but that was over 2 years ago and it has been working fine up until about a month ago.

Woah, it’s crazy, I have repair a good fifty of ps3 slim and every time I see a post here it’s a problem I’ve never seen (or not exactly the same). So the answer and that for my case (the glitch was more violent i have some green glitch as a bonus) the problem came from the GPU. basically the balls under the GPU begins to no longer support the transition from hot to cold and it is necessary to change them so make a reballing of the GPU for repair it (used lower video quality can help lengthen the period before the display problem)

Thanks for your response!

I've never reballed components before, so I'm not sure how hard the process actually is. Can you shed some light on that?

I wouldn't mind attempting to reball the GPU, but since I've never done it before, I'm hesitant to try it out for fear of making the problem worse and ending up having to replace the console anyway.

I did buy some thermal paste, so I was going to teardown the unit, replace the thermal paste, clean up the motherboard and any dust or residue and see how that went.

Do you think this may help?

I've also considered buying a replacement fan, but I hear mine running fine, so I don't know if it would really do any good.

Hello sorry for the response time, I have not reconnected to ifixit since I published my response.

Reballing is undoubtedly the most difficult repair to do on a slim ps3 and requires a special machine or either a very good control of its hot air gun, because you have to heat enough the component to melt the solder underneath, but not too much either to avoid damaging the component.

Changing the thermal paste will help the GPU and make glitches appear after more time to play and reduce console freezes, but will not 100% solve the problem

Fan do not lose quality over time so no need to replace it
