Mic problem on speakerphone

All microphones work normally on front and back video and on normal voice call. Front mic doesn’t work on speakerphone. On FaceTime, back mic is really low and front mic doesn’t work.

Problem started after dropping phone in clean fresh water very briefly. After initially drying out phone speaker and mics, the bottom mic wasn’t working. I blew out the mics a bit more aggressively with compressed air and the bottom mic started working again but front and back mics were not working. Over time, the front and back mics started working again on videos but not calls/FaceTime.

Any ideas?

I’ve read that replacing the charge port could be a solution but does that make facial recognition not work anymore on an iPhone XR?

So first thing is narrowing down exactly which mic(s) are affected.

There are actually 4 mics in the XR. Mics 1 and 4 are on the charge port. This can safely be replaced without affecting Face ID. These mics are typically used for normal voice calls (not on speaker).

Mic 2 is on the the flash/button cable. This would be the rear mic.

Mic 3 is part of the receiver speaker/sensor flex cable. This is the one I think is your issue. But it may require some resting to figure out. Replacing this cable will affect your Face ID since there are some components on this flex that are tied to this function.

If your phone was dropped in water, you may need to open it up and check for liqui damage for the most complete answer.

Thanks!

I do think that front facing mic is the problem but why would it work on video mode?

@mtnmann Video may be pulling from multiple microphones. Microphone 4 for example, isn’t even used in capture of audio that is replayed. it is purely for noise cancellation/background noise filtering.

It’s hard with anything related to Audio or cameras because there are a lot software components to making them function the way Apple does. So mics will often work together to produce the best Audio. One mic being out may not affect quality equally in all places.

See what happens if you try to front video and cover the other mics somehow (sturdy tape would probably do).

If it was my phone my first thought would be to replace the charging port assembly. Two of your microphones are located on that part so that should get you fixed up most of the way. The charging port is not paired to the logic board in any way, so there should be no ill effects to replacing it; you definitely won't lose Face ID from changing it. Unfortunately iFixit doesn't have a guide for that repair, but there's a Spanish site called Nadie Me Llama Gallina that has just what you need.

Manuales / Apple iPhone XR / Flex with charging connector

As far as replacement parts, they're available on all the major sites including Amazon, eBay and AliExpress among others. The color of the charging port is supposed to match the phone, so if you want to be correct you should find one that matches, but here's an example from Amazon that would work; they have black, white and gold colors available.

Amazon.com: E-REPAIR Charging Port Data Connector Flex Cable Replacement for iPhone XR (Black) : Cell Phones & Accessories

The rear microphone is mounted on the flash/button flex and again that part can be replaced without problems. Here's the guide for that.

Manuales / Apple iPhone XR / Flex push buttons and flash

Here's an example of where you can buy a replacement part; of course there are many others out there as well.

Amazon.com: E-REPAIR Power Volume Button Silent Switch Flash Light Flex Cable Pre-Installed Metal Bracket Holder Replacement for iPhone XR : Cell Phones & Accessories

Note that I'm not advocating for Amazon; rather their sites were simply the first ones to come up on a cursory search. You can also support iFixit's repair efforts by purchasing the charging port assembly directly from them; they definitely have a much larger selection of colors available.

iPhone XR Lightning Connector Assembly

As I mentioned previously, neither of those parts will cause your Face ID to fail. Outside of the Face ID components (the earpiece speaker assembly and the front camera assembly), the only other part on the iPhone XR that's paired is the battery.

Good luck and let us know how it all turns out!

Thanks for the reply!

I was thinking it was my forward facing mic on the ear speaker cable that is faulty but the fact that it works on video mode is confusing me because I thought speakerphone also uses that mic? And the answer above mentions replacing that component does mess up facial recognition.

Can anyone confirm that the front facing mic by the ear speaker definitely handles speakerphone mode? If so, why would it work on video but not on phone?
