Replacement screen does not fit

I’m trying to replace the screen on an iPhone XS. I’ve tried 2 different screens now and neither of them fit. The metal tabs on the new screens are different sizes or are in different locations than the tabs on the old screen that I took off. This isn’t a situation where the tabs stayed with the the phone because they are there on the old screen. It’s just they don’t match the new screen, so I can’t get it to snap together. Were there different models of the XS that would take different screens? Currently my only option is to take a dremel and grind down the tabs on the new screen.

Here are some pictures. The 3 major differences are shown in the pictures. In the first picture, the old screen is on the right and I circled a little threaded hole in the upper right hand corner that is missing on the new screen. Then there are 2 other pictures where the old screen is on top of the new screen. You can see that the tabs at the top are at different locations, the old screen have them outboard more. Then for the picture of the side tabs, the old screen is also on top and you can see that the tabs are smaller on the old screen and in a slightly different location.

Hi Joel,

If I had to make a bet, my money would be on the phone model being misidentified. I'm guessing you can't get into the phone to look up what it says in Settings / About, is that right? You might be able to identify the specific model by looking at the number and placement of the holes at the bottom of the phone for the speakers; those tend to be very particular.

Finally, you can always get the information you need by looking it up via the IMEI number. That'll be engraved in the SIM card tray and you should be able to locate the model number inside the opening to the SIM tray.

Welp, now I'm at a loss too. Here's what the IMEI checkers had to say about your phone.

Yep, it is indeed an iPhone XS, no question about it. So what's going on? Can you add some pictures of the new vs old screens and the frame they're mounted on?

Update (11/16/23)

Hi Joel,

Okay the pictures helped. I'm not sure what's going on with your vendor, but your replacement screens are made for an iPhone X, not a XS. Compare the tabs on your new displays to the picture of an iPhone X screen from iFixit and you'll see that the tabs and screws line up exactly.

Contrast that with the iPhone XS screen also sold by iFixit and you've got a pretty compelling case that you got sent the wrong screen(s).

I assume you got the two screens from the same seller? That's the only explanation I can think of as to how you would get the wrong screen twice in a row.

So third time's the charm; I'd suggest you return the first two and reorder the XS screen - from a different vendor this time.

Out of curiosity, did you plug it in? Did it work? It wouldn't surprise me to find that they're basically the same screen except for the mounting; I know the old iPhone 4 CDMA and GSM versions were basically a similar situation where everything was the same except for the mounting tabs. Actually, I think it was just one tab, but you get my point.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I can get at that information.

Model number is MTAG2LL/A

Serial number is F18CK4GAKPFP

IMEI is 35 313310 179403 2

IMEI2 is 35 313310 197062 4

Does that give the information needed to sort this out?

Excellent. Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll try again with a different vendor. And yes, the screen does ply in and work just fine. So, it does appear to just be the mounting locations. Thanks so much for your help!
