Can I mod it to play dvd
would it be possible to mod my Wii to play DVD disks, without compromising the ability to play Wii and GameCube disks, perhaps through software mods

Maybe. As far as I can tell, it depends on your disc drive (https://www.rwiihacks.com/tutorials/burn...). Even if it does work, it'll most likely put extra stress on the drive, wearing it out faster.
If you want to do it anyway, head to wii.hacks.guide and get your wii modded. Once you're done with that, download WiiMC, pop in your DVD, and see if WiiMC will play it
