No power or life (no light indicators either)

My laptop was previously working fine but now it seems to show no signs of life at all. I’ve refreshed the bios, unplugged the battery and plugged it back in numerous times, and even went to the extent of unplugging it and plugging it back in. Some of the chips heat up when the laptop is plugged in but that’s it. I’ve left it behind for a few months but now I come back to it. I have little to no hope of its revival, but if anyone is able to please help that would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

I would try using a multimeter if you have one to test the battery voltage output. It should be around 11.55v for this laptop model to power the computer. If you have a voltage such as seven or below, this won't be enough to power the laptop. If this is the issue, you will need a new battery. Otherwise, one of the chips could overheat, causing a short or forced shutdown.

Using a Thermal Imaging Analyzing Camera will allow you to check if a chip is causing your issue.

Hi, thank you for replying. I have a multimeter but I don’t know where to check for the voltages. I also do not have a thermal camera.

As the battery uses a Plug connector, you can either stip the wire, but I would not do that unless you are certain you know what you are doing.

The easy but longer way to do this is to test each pin 1 and 2, 1 and 3, and so on and so forth for all eight pins. One will show the voltage of your output on your multimeter. If you don't want to test each pin, there will be diagrams of the connectors you can use.

I don’t have any experience with laptops and looking through the HP manual, I see nothing that could help me in this situation

@calebs start with the easy things. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from your computer. Disconnect all external devices from the computer. Remove the battery if you can. Now hold the power button depressed for about 30sec-1min. Reapply the AC power adapter and see if your computer does show any sign of life.

Next you want to check your power supply. Make sure it has the proper voltages. Check to make sure connectors are not bend etc. Check the DC-in jack of your laptop. Make sure there is no corrosion, debris etc. that prevents it from working. Clean it of any debris etc, use a few puffs of air to clean it out. If none of this works, get a ammeter and see if your laptop draws any amperage from the charger. After that, you need to check and see if your motherboard even gets power. To work on your laptop, use this manual Maintenance And Service Guide Once you have a multimeter, post some pictures of the meter, teh battery, the battery connector the AC power supply and the power supply connector. We'll show you how and where to connect it so you can check things out.

Of course, you may also have to consider replacing the battery. A depleted battery can no longer be charged. However, it should not prevent your computer from coming on, if it is connected to the AC adapter. It is also possible that a failed BIOS is what prevents your computer from starting up.

I will see what I can do, much appreciated! I have also spoken to Ollie about it but just incase I can't fix It at home, I will possibly send the laptop over to him.

@calebs your choice on what you want to do. Just remember that it is against community rules to solicit business etc. We are pretty serious about that on here. We do support the iFixit members that have proven to the community to be reliable and knowledgeable. We do not tolerate fishing for business etc. Here it is all about community and helping each other vs promoting ones business.

I have little to no experience in using the multimeter so all I was able to do was send some pictures (edit on original question). I've also done the button trick several times to no avail. The battery worked perfectly fine before & the charger worked very well in the past t, and to make sure, I used it on a compatible laptop and it worked perfectly fine. I have also done a complete teardown of the device and put it all back together. I hope this helps but I believe there could be a dead unit on the board and I do hope to try micro soldering but that could be when I have experience.

(I do understand what you previously said about business soliciting and Mr. Ollie seemed very genuine and gave me a choice. But I appreciate the heads up.)

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I was wondering if there is a way to turn the laptop on without using the power button. Or maybe a forced reset.
