Can anyone provide a good guide/tutorial for a screen replacement?

Videos found online scarcely show the screen replacement procedure. Does the entire back and battery need to be removed to install a new screen?

Hi Diego,

Your OnePlus phone is very similar to Samsung Galaxy phones in how the screen replacement is done. The usual/recommended/official way to do it is to replace the screen and the frame as one unit, meaning you don't have to worry about sealing and gluing the new screen onto the frame since it comes that way. The downside to that is you have to basically gut the phone, removing everything inside and transferring it to the new frame. They make up for that by making the process relatively easy; certainly it's far simpler than it would be on something like an iPhone. Here are step by step iFixit-style instructions for that repair. Note that it's in Spanish but used with the Chrome browser's translation feature, it's very usable even if you don't speak Spanish.

Manuals / OnePlus 11 / Full screen

The other way to do it is to separate the screen from the frame and just buy the screen without the frame. This requires an entirely different set of repair instructions and does involve having to glue the screen back on. Generally I've found that the screen+frame assembly is usually only a few dollars more than the screen alone, so it's not really enough justification for picking this method over the other, plus when you factor in buying the glue and possibly some clamps, I doubt you'd be actually saving anything.

Like you, I wasn't able to find any videos or guides showing how to do just the screen replacement on your phone; there are several out there for the 11 5G and the 11R models though and I imagine if you go through the screen+frame guide thoroughly you should be able to pick up on any differences between that and the 5G/11R guides if you're determined to go that way.

Of course, the screen itself is readily available on places like Amazon, eBay and AliExpress, plus there are many other sites that sell them as well. Just make sure you get the one with or without the frame as appropriate; some sites sell both while others may offer just one or the other.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your repair; let us know what you decide and how it goes.

Jerry, you are an absolute god send! Thank you for all of this helpful information. I actually am a fluent in Spanish, so this guide is very helpful. Furthermore, I didn't fully understand the difference in the listings with the frame and without the frame, so I appreciate you making that distinction for me. I have more experience with doing screen replacement than I do removing and reattaching parts. That being said, the screen on the OnePlus seems particularly difficult and fragile since it is curved on the edges. Is doing the screen replacement with the frame significantly easier than only replacing the screen and reusing the existing frame?

@deathtoaster It's really hard to say; the operations are quite different and it's not easy to quantify which is better or easier. There is a significant risk of damaging the old screen during removal with the screen only method, but then again, you're replacing it anyway, so really, how important is it if you damage it?

On the other hand, I've done the screen+frame replacement on a Samsung phone and it wasn't bad. If you've done screen only repairs and are comfortable with them, then it makes sense for you to do it that way.

I'd say the advantage to the screen+frame repair is that you don't have to worry about the integrity of the glue holding the screen on or how well it's sealed against liquids.

Ultimately it's up to you as to which you want to do. I lean toward the screen+frame version myself, but can see reasons to do the screen only repair. One other thing is that you get a brand new shiny housing with the screen+frame repair, so combined with a new screen your phone will look brand new again.

Thanks again Jerry. Last question I'll pester you with, does the frame+screen option include a glass back or does that have to be transferred over from the old phone?

par

@deathtoaster Not a problem, Diego, happy to answer any and all questions!

But no, generally the screen+frame does not come with the rear case; it's assumed you'll be reusing your existing one so you may either need to get a precut sheet of adhesive to reglue the rear panel on, or else buy some glue for that.

I'm not sure about your phone, but I did find that on the Samsung phones the rear glass was very thin and very well glued down, so take your time, use plenty of heat and be patient getting it off. I had to blow an extra $15 on the phone I was working on because I wasn't careful enough and ended up breaking the original back cover.
