Fan spin, no POST and No Video

Hello everyone,

First time posting here so apologies if this is silly!

Mac Pro 6,1 that no longer POST’s or shows Video out. Was fine on boot and then restarted into safe mode without holding shift.

After a quick NVRAM reset Mac no longer POSTs

Tried new RAM no joy, Replaced coin battery no joy, tried all video out options, diags LED indicated bottom LED PCIE switch status flashing indicating V1 or V2 mode (been trying to find out whether this is indicating why I can’t get USB keyboard to register!)

I have tried replacing both GPU A and B but honestly there is a chance these cards are defective as well since I cannot test them currently.

Anything I am missing?

First of all. This is VERY not silly. This is why the forum exists. Rest assured, you're in the right place.

Secondly. I have not troubleshot many of these and they are sort of weird complex puzzles to service. But I AM certified to repair them (take that for what you will Apple repair certifications don't mean much).

The verbiage from the repair manual for this model specifically says:

#8: PCIe Switch Status: This indicates the status of the link from the PCIe switch on the I/O Board to the CPU. During startup, this indicates that the system has reached EFI Boot. If the link to the PCIe switch is not operating in PCIe v3 mode, this LED will blink. A fast blink indicates v2 mode, while a slow blink indicates v1 mode. These states may correlate to issues with Thunderbolt or USB devices.

So it sounds to me like you're in the right neighborhood. It's attempting to boot, but could be an issue with either thunderbolt or USB devices. So could be something wrong with a specific peripheral, the IO board itself, the IO board flex cable connector or a bunch of other things further down the rabbit hole. I might also check the Repair Manual for this model since it will have some specific troubleshooting flows you can use.

Thanks a lot Alisha! I have been following the troubleshooting workflow for no video and at this point have reached the “escalation required” section!

I think you may be correct with IO but also struggling to see how that could fail while in use so also suspicious of GPU B as they don’t have the best reputation!

Hi, just an update on this, replaced both GPU’s with known good and still have the exact same issue. I’m now leaning to CPU riser which is just not worth it now unfortunately I think my Mac is dead :(
