So airplane mode wouldn't do much to quell overheating, have you dropped it recently?

The main processor is near the camera, and has some heatsink material against the back glass. If your phone has a hot spot in this location it may be down to the processor load. Perhaps some app is running when it shouldn't. I suggest you check what is using the most battery.
