My Steam Deck Cont ID doesn't start with either MEDA or MHDA

The instructions for replacing the left thumbstick on my Steam Deck says the following... however, my Controller ID starts with MLCB? Anybody know why that might be?

  • Each Steam Deck ships with one of two different models of thumbsticks, Type A or Type B. Although nearly identical, capacitive touch capability relies on the correct type to be installed.
  • To identify which replacement thumbsticks you need, navigate to SettingsSystem and check the Steam Deck Controller ID.
  • If the Controller ID starts with "MEDA" that device needs Type A thumbsticks.
  • If the Controller ID starts with "MHDA" that device needs Type B thumbsticks.

If your Controller ID starts with MLCB, you most likely have the Steam Deck OLED.
Type A/Type B joysticks are only compatible with the original LCD model as the daughterboards are different.

If you are looking for replacement OLED-model compatible joysticks, GuliKit's Hall Effect Joysticks (Amazon) are a popular choice as some people go out of their way to immediately replace their stock joysticks with them to eliminate stick drift & improve the overall feel of using them.

(Looking at the Amazon reviews though, might be a good idea to follow a YouTube video on this carefully (like this one). Don't be hesitant to contact support or return them for a refund if need be.)
