iPhone restarting every 3 minutes?

I dropped my phone down the toilet a few days ago (probably max 20 seconds) cleaned it and it was still working as normal. Yesterday the front and back cameras fogged up but they were fine after a few hours but today my phone started shutting down every 3 minutes? it charges okay and doesn’t shut down when on charge it and doesn’t shut down when i am not using it. just seems like every time i pick it up to do something thats when it shuts down and i have 3 minutes to do anything before its off again.

i have had my phone in water plenty of times and not had this issue. i did have an issue back in June where my screen was flickering and then went black but phone still working underneath, took it to apple repair shop and they replaced screen for free as phone less than two year old and bought from them. i did have to take it back the same day as they did not replace the screws near the charging port and they didn’t seem too happy with me noticing it? now wondering if they maybe didn’t replace the screen properly which has possibly caused worse water damage?

i have attached the panic mode

Hi, yes this error points to a battery issue, a battery replacement should fix it. However it could also be pointing to a board fault near the battery or a problem with the chip on the battery. So I’m not 100% Certain a battery replacement will fix it. But certainly the cheapest and easiest thing to replace to find out.

If water got to the battery best to get it looked at ASAP. Board needs to be cleaned and tested.

One other thing to note is the crash report is only giving data to the point the phone stopped responding. This means the water could have affected other things that the error log was unable to relay.

I have it booked in on saturday to be looked at so hopefully it is only just the battery. just strange as it’s been 3 days since it happened and everything was completely fine until this morning. thinking of just holding out and getting the 16 in a few weeks if it’s something more costly. but thank you

Without personally looking at and testing your phone,

I can only go on experience and assumptions . The possibilities are endless I am thinking worse case for the most part. Please be mindful water and phones don’t mix. If you have important data to you, always have back ups . Don’t trust what anyone or any manufacturer says about phones being waterproof.

One slight error or flaw in the adhesive on a “waterproof” phone that phone is toast imo. Hopefully it’s just a simple battery replacement and a board clean 🙏 good luck 🤞

@Jerry Wheeler is right about it is charging port not battery giving the code. Still get it seen though I would honestly.

Hi have to disagree with Daniel here, as the error code on your phone is 0x40000. That code as been identified in the iPhone SMC Panic Assertion Failed wiki page as an error associated with the charging port assembly.

Sorry to say, iFixit doesn't have a guide to that repair, but there's a Spanish site that has just what you need.

Manuals / Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max / Charging Flex - Nobody Calls Me Chicken

The guide is in Spanish but if you view it with the Chrome browser, the translation feature works quite well.

The repair is fairly straight-forward, but the downside is that on your phone the charging port flex cable runs underneath both the battery and the motherboard, so both of those have to be removed to be able to take out the charging port assembly. Fortunately Apple hasn't gotten around to pairing the charging port to the motherboard, so there won't be any parts pairing issue with replacing it. Note that the port comes in different colors to match your phone, but realistically you can use any color port; the difference is strictly cosmetic.

As far as the availability of the part, you can support iFixit's repair efforts by buying the port directly from them.

Of course for those who are more cost conscious you can easily find replacement parts on the big three sites, eBay, Amazon and AliExpress, although other sites will come up as well on a general internet search.

Having run into phones exhibiting a charging port error code, my own success rate with swapping out the port has been very good, so I strongly suspect that a new charging port will stop the rebooting that's being such a big pain in the butt for you.

Yes I did say I wasn’t 100% certain if it was battery . If water entered the charging port which does make sense, changing just that is fine and should be done. Except water could be in other places so I would still recommend it get a good clean and check for further water damage, as charging port is literally the first failure point water entered it , there easily could be more the phone is unable to report.
